    Notes
    • Amanda Montgomery (Aunt Mandy)

She had children who had families (she considered that her home was with her son, Joe) but all these families were active and no doubt noisy, so she liked to stay part of the time quietly and serenely with her sisters, and they always enjoyed having her.

She had married George Washington Stamps (known as Wash) who had died when he was 55 years old (according to his gravestone in the Chitwood Cemetery). They lived on an upland farm near what is now Ridgley, and had a hard struggle to make a living on it. Nowadays people have learned better how to live in those non-valley areas, but then if you couldn't raise corn and clover and wheat, and thereby have cows, horses, and other stock, you just didn't know other things to do.

I never remember her talking a great deal, but I do recall her telling a story one time about going somewhere on foot, taking their dog along, and realizing it was rabid. However, it would still obey them enough to stay behind until they got to their destination and safety.

As a footnote here I might say that mad-dog stories were the horror tales of my childhood. In the days before telephones, a rabid dog would trot through a neighborhood biting stock, other dogs, and sometimes people, and there was no way to send out a neighborhood warning. Unless some of the men got on horses and followed it, it might trot unchecked for miles, going through fields and woods out of sight. There was no cure for the bite. I never saw one, but I sure looked a lot behind me on my way to and from school, and a mad-dog was really the most fear I had of the dark.

But back to Aunt Mandy, the beautiful "Appalachian" basket I have was her stocking-mending basket. I don't know who made it.

She wsa buried in Concord Cemetery with the Montgomery family, not in Chitwood by Wash. I think the Chitwood Cemetery was in a very bad brushy condition at that time, but when I was there inÂ….it was clean and neatly manicured.
