    Notes
    • Malinda Montgomery (Aunt Lindy) by Lucile Reese

I was rather young when she died, but I remember her as being cook and housekeeper. (Aunt Bettie helped, but she was slow and crippled with arthritis, and Aunt Dicy was chiefly the outside worker). It seems that Aunt Lindy was the one who took special pains with Alva, letting her help cook, or help do whatever task was going on at the moment.

She never married; Alva told me that her sweetheart was killed in the Civil War. I never heard the matter discussed, whether Aunt Lindy always carried a love for him, or whether she didn't marry simply because there was a shortage of men after the war. I have a quilt of hers (came through Alva) dated 1881.

One time she was on the Tom Ford place picking blackberries along a rail fence. A rattlesnake bit her on the arm. As treatment the family bound on tobacco. Afterward she had many brown spots on her arm that the family attributed to the rattlesnake bite. Now I remember the brown spots, but don't remember whether there were more on one arm than the other or not. I have since heard them called liver spots. Somehow I feel a little doubtful that either liver or rattlesnake.

She died of some internal ulcer which broke a day or so before her death. For a time afterward Momma let me stay with Aunt Betty and Aunt Dicy at nights to keep them company. Those three sisters had been together all their lives (except for Aunt Dicy's brief marriage) and I am sure Aunt Lindy's death was a deep loss to them. Looking back, I wonder how much I helped; but they loved me and I loved them, and I suppose a child's chatter could fill some void of loneliness.
